This is Rubbish host ‘Feast’ at Machynlleth Market, Wednesday 10th November from 12 – 2pm, a theatrical community banquet from food that would otherwise have been wasted.
Over 20 million tonnes of good food is wasted in the UK alone every year whilst 4 million of its citizens are unable to access or afford a nutritional diet. If we stopped wasting food that could have been eaten, we could also reduce environmental impacts, the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off UK roads! Tackling the problem at every stage of the food supply chain can significantly reduce green house gas emissions, save consumers money and stop good food going to waste.
This is Rubbish is an anti food waste campaign that aims to demonstrate the industrial scale of food waste through arts led public events. This Wednesday they host a banquet on Machynlleth Market, where you can literally ‘feast’ on the surrounding issues of food waste.
‘The idea of a feast is to celebrate abundance. This is Rubbish celebrate an abundance that’s been declared useless. Food is our most immediate and direct link with the earth. This is Rubbish invite people to explore all manner of connected issues through the act of feasting’. -This is Rubbish campaigner
The Machynlleth based campaign was founded in October 2009, officially launching in December at the monumental Feeding the 5000 in Trafalgar Square, a public feast for 5000 people on food that otherwise would have gone to waste. Since then the campaigners have continued to create theatrical, participatory feasts, give educational presentations and facilitate food waste games.
In order to continue their work that currently relies solely on volunteers, This is Rubbish applied for a Welsh People’sMillions grant . They have made it through to the final round due to be screened after ITV Wales Tonight on Monday 22nd November, where it will be down to the public to phone in and vote for This is Rubbish, and enable them to continue communicating the shocking scale of food waste and related environmental impacts through communal feasting, participatory arts and community engagement across Wales.
Come along this Wednesday where This is Rubbish are hosting a food waste Feast in their home town Machynlleth. Held in the heart of the famous Machynlleth Market from 12 – 2pm, the group will create a festive feasting space entertained by live musicians, dancing hosts, and expert speakers, so that you may gain a taste of what they are all about. Feast welcomes all members of the community to participate – if you have your own delicious leftover recipe or surplus food, be sure to bring it along to share!
