“Feast” at Swansea Community Farm

The video above was made by Rosie Strickland, one of our volunteers, and provides an incite into what TiR is all about by some of the people we met during our short stay on the farm.

As a part of the cities Wise up to Waste week, we again ran a huge variety of workshops and discussions at the inspiring Swansea Community Farm, aimed at getting the facts about food waste out into the minds of anyone we came across. We held our round table discussions again, with a huge number of guests including PMDevelopments, Swansea Fair Trade Forum, Wales Food COOP, Coeden Fach Organic Growers, RCMA, Ecocentre Wales, City and County of Swansea Recycling and Sustainable Development Department. We ran Low Carbon Cook Offs with Eco Centre Wales, created Varied Veggies and Fanciful Fruits and Food From the Farm workshop and tour.

Over the two days we were able to have a much greater focus on working with children and schools. Having an unadvertised pre-booked session each morning with pupils from the local primary school and working specifically with a local youth group of volunteers throughout the whole event from set up, to preparations for the feast and the camp take down.

Our Feast on Monday night was eagerly attended by activists, farm workers, the farm trustees and even the local youth club. With live music from the young singer songwriter Sarah Passmore.

This event has so far been unique in that the food surplus we managed to source was from small retailers, producers, wholesalers and manufacturers all for one event, including the Swansea covered market, Castell Howell cash and carry, the Organic Fresh Food Company, and Govindas distribution. It was fantastic to meet and talk to individuals working in the supply chain, dealing with waste every day and understanding why surplus arises.
